The Port Augusta branch of
Rural Australians for Refugees
formed in October 2002 in response to the opening of the Baxter Immigration and Detention Facility
in October 2002.
Our Purpose is to:
- Make life more bearable for the people detained in the centre
- Improve community attitudes to people detained in the centre
- Provide support to each other
- Be a point of reference for other visiting / inquiring support groups
- Affect Government policy
There are many roles which people in the group take to provide support and understanding to those detained in
the Baxter Centre. Our primary focus is on visiting and phoning children, families and single men. We hope
that in time this will extend into the wider community.
We have been able to be involved with organising excursions for the children and families detained in the
Baxter Centre and the Port Augusta Housing Project. We are enthusiastic about pursuing the possibility of
excursions and sport for the men but to date this has not been facilitated.
The single men are detained in compounds only with other single men. These men are in desperate need of
human contact and support. Many have families remaining in the countries which they have fled. We hope to
promote the needs of these men and help provide them with some friendship and support. If you are able to
telephone, write to or visit one of the men detained in the single men’s compounds, please view the
information on contacting and visiting those detained in the Baxter Centre.
Any contact is greatly appreciated by the men and can make a difference to their daily lives.
