One of the myths that has grown out of the asylum seeker debate is that all asylum seekers are of the Muslim faith. This is not the case. At the Baxter Detention Centre there are peoples of various faiths, including Sabean Mandaeans (followers of the teachings of John the Baptist), Tamils and Christians.

A group of ministers and assistants of the Christian faith from Port Augusta, Whyalla, Port Pirie and Peterborough, attend weekly at the Baxter Detention Centre and conduct Christian church services. These are attended by detained people of various faiths and time is taken to include the prayers of all the faiths represented at the service. The detained people take an active part in the services leading songs, prayers, and readings as well as language interpretation.

Representation by a number of the clergy has been made to Minister Ruddock to provide Islamic services to the Muslim Detainees as well as provision of other faiths in keeping with the Australian Constitution and a number of United Nation Conventions.

To this date none has been provided.
